The term “applique” comes from the French word “applied.” Applique is a sewing technique in which fabric patches are layered on a foundation fabric, then stitched in place by hand or machine with the raw edges turned under or covered with decorative stitching. These embroidered patches can be applied to a wide variety of materials, from leather to denim to canvas and more.
Fusible Applique is a method to adhere applique shapes to the quilt top using a glue-based product attached to the back of the fabric shape. The raw edges of the fabric shape can be kept unstitched or finished with decorative stitches using decorative thread.
